Fall Ball

Fall Ball is a special time when teams are formed using the North Shore Girls Softball name but the rosters are determined by the coaches, parents, and players - not the league.  There is NO player draft, and there is no attempt to make these teams equal.  Fall Ball season is purely an opportunity for interested players to get additional softball practice with their friends.  Most of the teams are formed with girls who have played together on a recreation or all-star team.  Some of the teams have abilities similar to regular season recreation teams, while others are closer to all-star caliber.  It is a great way to keep skills sharp for the spring season.  It is also a great way to learn more as a coach!

The season runs from late August to the middle of November, with teams playing two games each Sunday.  There is no field availability (it is the softball “off-season”); so, teams do not usually have practices other than possible batting cage sessions.  However, somehow a team usually has a couple of practices prior to the season and then just the Sunday games throughout the fall.

Responsibilities

Interested Coaches:

  • Form teams on their own by contacting players and asking them to play. With many of the girls involved in several activities during the fall, it is best to have each team filled with 13 to 14 girls per team.  (Provide roster to Fall Ball coordinator)
  • Determine in which league they would like to participate (Mira Mesa, North County, or San Dieguito).  The team caliber will influence the league selection.  See below for more information about the Fall Ball Leagues .
  • Determine a budget and fees per player based on team costs: league fees, uniforms, umpire fees, umps, game balls, end of season party/trophies, etc.  The cost generally runs $75 to $125 per player.
  • Collect fees from each player.
  • Coach and have a great time with the players.

North Shore League:

  • Facilitate participation with a Fall Ball meeting (mid-late July, TBD) to insure that interested coaches and players are made aware of each other.  There is no guarantee that there will be enough teams to support all the player interest, and no guarantee that there will be enough players to support all interested coaches.  It is very advantageous to form a team on your own prior to the meeting.
  • Determine Fall Ball leagues looking for teams and communicate this to the coaches.
  • Provide coaches with equipment: (bats, practice balls, catcher’s gear)
  • Provide required ASA Insurance for all players currently registered for the 2008 spring season.  Will also get new players insured with proper payment to the league. (Approximately $10 if new to North Shore)

  Families:

  • Provide an ASA compliant helmet (NOCSAE symbol on the back of the helmet, with ASA approved face mask, chin strap.)
  • Since summer time is so busy and people are often hard to track down, we require the following information if you are interested in playing.
  • Please respond by July 25th , and provide the following information to the league at fallball@nsgsl.com :

Player's name:

Have fun hitting the fields in the fall!

The leagues North Shore sent teams to in 2007:

  North County Fall Ball League

Teams are split into divisions by skill.  Teams play two games against the same team, either traveling to the opponent's fields, or hosting the opponent at the Carmel Valley Recreation Center fields.  The two games are scheduled at either 9 am/11 am or 1:30 pm/3:30 pm start times.  Teams split the cost of the umpire at the field, with the home team taking care of their own field prep.

Mira Mesa Fall Ball League

Teams play two games, each against a different opponent.  All games are held at the Hour Glass Fields adjacent to Miramar College.  The two games could be scheduled back-to-back or separated by a two-hour break.  The league charges a team entry fee and the teams split the cost of the umpire at the field.  The league takes care of the field prep.

San Dieguito Fall Ball League

Teams play two games against the same opponent.  Many games are played at the Cardiff Sports Park, with others played at one of the two teams' fields.  The two games are scheduled at either 9 am/11 am or 1:30 pm/3:30 pm start times.  The league charges a team entry fee that covers all umpire and field fees.
